As you enter your third trimester, the excitement (and nervous energy!) really starts to build. One of the best ways to feel prepared for the big day is to have your hospital bag packed and ready to go by week 36.
But what do you actually need to bring, and what can you leave at home? Here is a practical, no-stress hospital bag checklist for you, your baby, and your birth partner.
🎒 What to Pack for Mom
Your focus should be on absolute comfort and easy access for nursing (if you plan to breastfeed).
- Important Documents: ID, insurance card, and your birth plan (bring a few printed copies).
- Comfortable Clothing: Pack a loose, dark-colored robe, a comfortable nightgown (button-down fronts are great for skin-to-skin and nursing), and cozy socks with non-slip grips.
- Nursing Essentials: 2-3 nursing bras, breast pads, and nipple cream.
- Going-Home Outfit: Choose something loose and comfortable, like maternity leggings or a maxi dress. (Hint: You will likely still look 5-6 months pregnant, so pack accordingly!)
- Toiletries: Lip balm (hospitals are very dry!), a toothbrush, hair ties, and travel-sized shampoo/body wash for your first post-birth shower.
🧸 What to Pack for Baby
The hospital will provide most of the immediate essentials (like diapers and basic swaddles), but you will need a few things of your own.
- Going-Home Outfit: Pack two different sizes (Newborn and 0-3 Months) since you won’t know exactly how big your baby is until they arrive!
- An Installed Car Seat: You cannot drive your baby home without a properly installed infant car seat.
- A Warm Blanket: For tucking around the baby in the car seat on the way home, especially if it is cold outside.
🔋 What to Pack for Your Partner/Support Person
Labor can be a long process, so your partner needs a bag too!
- Extra-Long Phone Charger: Hospital beds aren’t always close to wall outlets. A 10-foot charging cable is a lifesaver.
- Snacks and Drinks: Hospital cafeterias close at night. Pack protein bars, trail mix, and electrolyte drinks to keep energy levels up.
- A Change of Clothes & Basic Toiletries: So they can freshen up after a long night of supporting you.
