News Source: Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India | Launched: September 9, 2026 — Today

Poshan Maah 2026 launched India today — the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah was officially inaugurated this morning at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

The launch was led by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smt. Annpurna Devi, in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Smt. Savitri Thakur, and UP Cabinet Minister Smt. Baby Rani Maurya.

The month-long nationwide Jan Andolan for nutrition will run from September 9 to October 8, 2026 — with focused activities at Anganwadi Centres, schools, panchayats and households across every state and union territory.

What Happened at Today’s Launch

The launch event at Varanasi opened with a walkthrough of the Poshan Mela — an exhibition showcasing nutrition awareness, traditional foods, and community health initiatives. Senior officials from central and state governments, development partners, frontline workers, and programme beneficiaries attended.

A film commemorating 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) was screened, followed by a live interaction between Union Minister Annpurna Devi and Anganwadi Workers from across Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the transformative role of Anganwadi Centres in advancing the objectives of Poshan Abhiyaan. Union Minister Annpurna Devi formally launched the nationwide campaign.

This Year’s Theme — “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari”

The 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah carries the theme “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari” — Our Anganwadi, Our Responsibility. It calls upon every citizen to take shared ownership of the Anganwadi Centre as the first point of nutrition, health, and early learning for India’s children.

This is a significant shift from previous editions — placing community accountability, not just government delivery, at the centre of the nutrition campaign.

5 Focus Areas for September 2026

The Ministry announced that Poshan Maah 2026 will focus on five specific themes throughout September:

1. Dietary Diversity and Protein Intake: Community-level demonstrations of balanced meals using locally available protein sources — dal, eggs, paneer, ragi. The campaign specifically targets protein deficiency in young Indian children.

2. Fresh Hot Cooked Meals at Anganwadi Centres: For the first time in the Supplementary Nutrition Programme’s history, revised guidelines formally define and mandate Hot Cooked Meals at Anganwadi Centres with weekly menu rotation. SNP Menu Boards displaying daily menus are now required at every centre.

3. Community Ownership and Accountability: Anganwadi Management Committee meetings will be held at every centre this month, with parents, SHG members, and Panchayat representatives invited to attend and participate.

4. Nutrition, Early Stimulation and Education: Home visits for children aged 0-3 years, developmental milestone recording, and ECCE Day celebrations at every Anganwadi for children aged 3-6 years.

5. 10 Years of PMMVY: A 100% saturation drive to enrol all eligible pregnant and lactating women in the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana — which provides direct cash support for maternal nutrition.

The Scale of Poshan Abhiyaan — 8 Years On

Since Poshan Abhiyaan was launched in 2018, more than 150 crore Jan Andolan activities have been conducted through Poshan Maah, Poshan Pakhwada and other community engagement initiatives.

The 2026 edition builds on this momentum — with specific structural reforms (mandatory hot cooked meals, SNP Menu Boards, Anganwadi Management Committees) that move the programme from awareness to accountability.

What This Means for Indian Parents — Today

If you have a child under 6: Visit your local Anganwadi Centre this September. The centre is running extra nutrition sessions, developmental milestone assessments, and ECCE activities throughout the month.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding: September is the month to register for PMMVY if you haven’t already. The direct cash benefit of Rs. 5,000 supports maternal nutrition — contact your ASHA worker or nearest Anganwadi for registration.

For all families: Attend the Anganwadi Management Committee meeting at your nearest centre. You now have a formal mechanism to engage with — and if needed, provide feedback on — the quality of services your child receives.

On protein in children’s diet: The campaign’s specific focus on protein deficiency is relevant to every Indian family with young children. Dal at every meal, eggs from 6 months, paneer, ragi — these are the protein sources the campaign highlights. Our baby food recipes India guide covers how to incorporate these into your baby’s daily meals.

MumPappaHub’s Take

The official launch of Poshan Maah 2026 in Varanasi today marks the beginning of what is India’s most important annual nutrition campaign. The 9th edition has more structural substance than previous editions — the mandatory hot cooked meals at Anganwadi Centres, the SNP Menu Boards, and the Anganwadi Management Committee requirements all represent concrete accountability mechanisms, not just awareness goals.

The PMMVY anniversary campaign is also significant — Rs. 5,000 in direct cash support for pregnant and lactating women is genuinely meaningful for families where maternal nutrition is compromised by economic constraints.

If we could summarise the message for Indian parents this September: your local Anganwadi is more accountable than ever. Use it.
